Why Women Should Not Smoke?
by Monalisa Hyden

There are many reasons behind why a woman starts smoking, mainly to get accepted in a particular group of friends or to fight against depression. Women begin smoking usually as teenagers, generally before high school graduation. And the younger a girl is when she starts, the more heavily she is likely to use tobacco as an adult. Teenage girls are just as likely to smoke as are boys. Whatever may be the reason, tobacco smoking harms the women in the same way as it does to men, but we can add a few more damages to the list for women.
As experts saysmoking is the most preventable cause of early death in this country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking-related diseases caused the deaths of about 178,000 women in each year from 1995-1999 and these women died 14.5 years earlier because of their smoking. Now, let me tell you in how many ways smoking affects a woman.
- Cancer, the main risk is always there with smoking.
- Smoking women reach natural menopause two years earlier than non-smokers.
- Smoking women using oral contraceptives are ten times more at risk of heart attack and stroke compared to those who are smoking but not taking contraceptives.
- Smoking women are at more risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke during the use of estrogens.
- The fertility of smoking women is 72% then that of non-smokers.
- Nicotine restricts blood flow that has a negative effect on sensation and arousal during sex.
- Women who smoke during pregnancy experience preterm delivery, placenta previa, premature rupture of membranes, miscarriage, and neonatal death.
- The more she smokes during pregnancy, lower the birth weight of the infant.
- Cigarette smoking increases the likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome including infant and prenatal deaths.
- Babies born to smoking mothers suffer from learning disorders, attention deficit disorder and disruptive behavior.
- Infants, whose mothers smoked during the time of pregnancy, have the same nicotine levels in their bloodstream as smoking adults and even they go through nicotine withdrawal syndrome during their initial days of life.
- Children born to smoking mothers experience more ear aches, respiratory problems, colds, and illnesses requiring more pediatrician visits compared to children born to nonsmoking mothers.
Isnt it a long list of diseases and risks that comes with the nicotine pleasure to
women? The decision is entirely yours, whether to quit or live with nicotine and lead an unhealthy, short life.
If you wish to
quit smoking, as I always say, where there is a will, there is a wayliving without nicotine is not that tough. You just need to wish a Nicotine free life. Think before lighting up the next cigarette. Till then. keep the faith! :-)
